In January, members of the County Leadership Team attended Summit25, The Scouts National Conference which was held in Birmingham.

Summit25 brought together more than 700 volunteers from across the UK, along with members of the UK Leadership Team and Trustee Board to reflect on the success of the 2018-2025 Skills For Life strategy, and start to shape our next strategy which will begin next year in 2026.

Over the weekend we considered:

  • What young people need from Scouts
  • What the world will look like in 2035
  • Volunteering trends
  • How technology can support Scouting

Highlights for our Northumberland Scouts team were hearing from:

CEO of The Children’s Society, Mark Russell on the findings of the Good Childhood Report. The report found young people in the UK have some of the lowest levels of life satisfaction in Europe, we have the second highest levels of bullying in schools in Europe, and  41% of young people are worried about rising prices as increasing numbers of children live in households experiencing financial difficulties. The report highlights the need to increase opportunities for young people to be active, creative and to socialise and the importance of safe spaces for young people, like those provided by Scouting.

Darren Edwards, Adaptive Adventurer as he shared his inspiring personal journey and the importance of the Scouting mindset in overcoming adversity

And our very own Chief Scout, Dwayne Fields about his scouting journey and his gratitude for our volunteers!

We had a great couple of days, and we’re excited to be bringing lots of ideas back to Northumberland Scouts to help us keep building a brighter future for young people in Northumberland, North Tyneside and Newcastle.

We’re looking forward to sharing more information on Summit 25 and our own County strategy in the coming months.
