Over a hundred Scouts and Guides from across the region are working hard in rehearsals ahead of their variety show at the end of April. The annual extravaganza takes place at the People’s Theatre in Heaton for five nights of family entertainment.
Newcastle Gang Show is the longest running Gang Show in the world, with the first show taking place in 1937 and for many years taking place at the Theatre Royal. A lot has changed since then, but fast forward to the present day and talented young people are preparing to tread the boards once again. They’ve been rehearsing since January learning song words, dance routines and comedy sketches, all whilst gaining new skills and confidence.
The show is similar to the royal variety performance with a fantastic mix of modern songs from the charts, hilarious comedy skits and stunning dance routines all accompanied by a live band. This year’s show features a tribute to Tina Turner, a visit to the zoo, a wild west shootout and of course the Gang Show classics including Crest of a Wave.

Many of the young people taking part in the show will be stepping onto the stage for the very first time, with the show giving them the chance to experience the performing arts in a fun and friendly environment. Behind the curtain an army of dedicated volunteers make sure the show can happen with adults giving their time in a range of roles such as production, production, set build, costumes, makeup, lighting, sound and more. The primary aim of the event is to allow young people to develop stage and performance skills, confidence and self-esteem.
Stu Bennett, Producer said “It’s been a absolute joy to work with our talented youngsters over the last few months. Their hard work and dedication is amazing. Our show is suitable for all the family with a wide mix of modern chart music along with the traditional Gang Show tunes. You don’t have to be a Scout to enjoy our show!.”
The performances take place from Tuesday 22nd to Saturday 26th April 2025 at the People’s Theatre in Heaton, with evening performances at 7pm and a Saturday Matinee at 2.00pm. Tickets can be booked online at newcastlegangshow.co.uk or call 07958 188242.
